Naomi Osaka pulls out of Hong Kong Open with back injury

Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark kisses the winner's trophy after beating Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia in the women's singles final in the China Open at the National Tennis Center in Beijing, Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018. "I'm just thinking one match at a time, and it can only get harder from here".

Earlier, Ekaterina Makarova of Russian Federation and Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko had also withdrawn from the tournament due to a schedule change and low back injury, respectively.

Osaka, 20, required a medical break in the second set for what appeared to be lower back pain.

Wozniacki, ranked world No. 2, was very concentrated in the match and endured the pressure of the end to beat her unseeded opponent, world No. 20, in less than an hour and a half, reports Efe news.

The Latvian said she had sustained the problem in her win over Croatia's Donna Vekic in the last 16. "I feel like we both fought as hard as we could".

Sevastova retired from tennis in May 2013 and studied leisure management instead after becoming frustrated by injuries.

But it was ultimately Sevastova's inconsistency of 35 errors, 22 of which came in the crucial second set, that cost her the chance to win what would have been the biggest title of her career. In the men's quarter-finals, the Italian Fabio Fognini continued his march towards a fourth title of the season with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Marton Fucsovics of Hungary.

The Argentine will now play Georgia's Nikoloz Basilashvili in the final after the Georgian defeated Kyle Edmund of Great Britain.
