Ballon d'Or 2018: Alisson and Benzema among first five nominees

Cristiano Ronaldo headlines the latest batch of players to be announced as nominees for the 2018 Ballon d'Or by France football. But who would be in our writers' top three players?

France won the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation, and seven players of the squad made the 30 man nominees for the 2018 Ballon d'Or.

Atletico Madrid striker Griezmann, however, is keen to see one of his compatriots take the big prize - with the 27-year-old himself arguably the most likely France star to do so.

However, the Manchester United man believes he should not win the Ballon d'Or ahead of his global team-mates.

Five-time victor Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Antoine Griezmann lead the shortlist for football's most prestigious individual prize, while Kylian Mbappe is the standout in the race for the new Kopa Trophy for young players.

Modric, a World Cup runner-up with Croatia, beat Juventus' Ronaldo and Salah to win the Federation Internationale de Football Association prize last month after Messi was surprisingly left off the final three-man list. "The best team in the world surely possesses the best player, right?"

Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah has so far received 51% of the fan votes on France Football's Ballon d'Or victor poll on its website. "Historically speaking, it is for the best of the best".

"Kylian reminds me of Cristiano when he was in Manchester", Griezmann told France Football.

"There are only star players, only legends among the winners".

"One of the four also because there is Kante. He will be scoring 50 goals per season". "It would be a dream to be considered an example to others". "I messaged him afterwards and said: 'You need to call for the ball closer to the goal".
