Basilashvili upsets Del Potro to win in Beijing

Basilashvili upsets Del Potro to win in Beijing

Unheralded Nikoloz Basilashvili earned one of the biggest wins of his career when he upset Juan Martin Del Potro to win the China Open on Sunday.

By contrast, unseeded Georgian Basilashvili had endured an energy-sapping matchup with Britain's Kyle Edmund en route to the final.

Beijing organisers confirmed that Fognini, who was chasing a fourth title of the season, would play no further part in the tournament, sending top seed Del Potro straight through to the final. The Russian is seeking a third title of the year, while Nishikori has not triumphed on the ATP Tour since February 2016.

"I've been training hard to play at this level", Del Potro, who has booked his spot in next month's season-ending ATP Finals in London, said.

The all-action 26-year-old immediately broke Del Potro's serve in the first game and appeared unfazed by his opponent's stellar reputation.

This seemed to affect del Potro, whose miscued drop-shot in the following set saw Basilashvili break serve once again to serve for the match at 5-4. The Italian injured his leg against Marton Fucsovics in the final stages of the quarter-final match and he was unable to play today or the next week in Shanghai.

In another engrossing game that ebbed and flowed, del Potro saved two match points before failing to convert two break points of his own.
