Red Sox move on to ALCS with heart-stopping win over Yankees

Boston battered an ineffective Luis Severino and silenced a charged-up Yankee Stadium crowd that emptied out fast on a night when Red Sox rookie manager Alex Cora made all the right moves. It was loud the whole time, and I think even opposing players can feel it.

He still remains an option to pinch hit once the Red Sox get into New York's bullpen, and that's been one of many roles he's thrived in over his career.

For the Yankees' sake, hopefully the answer is no. It was easily the best start by a Sox pitcher in a playoff game since 2013. He made 29 starts this season and in only 15 of them did he throw more than five innings.

By the same token, the Yankees got emasculated on their home field on Monday night. They'll need to do something to show some pride and keep the series alive, if only from a mental standpoint. It was the most lopsided postseason loss in team history and a truly embarrassing thrashing. But the Red Sox, frequent visitors who clinched the AL East crown at Yankee Stadium just 2½ weeks ago, were hardly intimidated. "The good thing about today is it's one game".

And there was no sign of panic when Eovaldi slipped on the wet mound and missed a chance at an easy out to start the fourth inning.

TBS broadcaster - and ex-Mets pitcher - Ron Darling called out Benintendi for a couple of decorum violations.

The New York Yankees were 6-0 at home in the postseason previous year, and enter Monday's ALDS Game 3 with the AL Wild Card Game win in their pinstriped back pocket.

The Red Sox began the eighth inning with back-to-back singles off of Stephen Tarpley before Holt scored Rafael Devers on a ground-rule double, giving Boston a 12-1 lead. "But boy, swinging 3-0 in the seventh with a 10-1 lead".

"I would find that offensive, personally", said Darling, who also questioned Benintendi's decision to steal a base in the fifth. Holt hit for the cycle in the Red Sox's 16-1 win. But his command never suffered as he kept the best home run-hitting team in baseball history from going deep. I was trying to hit a home run.

"I go [to the bullpen] 20 minutes before the game, I play catch, and then I always get on the mound 10 minutes before the game", Severino added.

Not sure what Darling or any of baseball's other gatekeepers wanted the Red Sox to do. Betts also scored two runs and drove in two. Martinez at the plate, Benintendi stole second base. He being the one Boston batter who really got to Yankees closer Austin Romine.

This isn't a random game in the middle of May. They have just one run in their past 23 innings against him. Knowing Sabathia, it shouldn't be a surprise if he did something. Referencing the Red Sox getting to Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka in Game 2, he used an old idiom that happens to include a racial slur. As with the Yankees, Houston hosted the Red Sox for a four-game series at Minute Maid Park, and then visited Fenway Park for a three-game set.

With their backs against the proverbial wall, it may be wise for the Yankees to just focus on winning the game and not some silly revenge fantasy.
