Nick Kyrgios rows with umpire in surprise Shanghai Masters exit

Big-serving American Sam Querrey struck 14 aces on his way to a 6-3, 6-4 win over world number 16 Diego Schwartzman and set up a second round meeting against his compatriot Taylor Fritz, who beat Robin Haase 6-, 3 7-6 (3).

But he also sounded a note of caution.

"And only through understanding work ethic and scheduling and whatever it might be, creating the right team around himself, only then can you unlock the potential really".

"We don't really know and I don't think he really knows exactly what his potential is".

Last night, the 23-year-old was dumped out of the Shanghai Masters, following a clash with an umpire who deemed his efforts to be 'borderline'.

A year ago he was fined $US10,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct after hitting two balls out the stadium and quitting mid-match against Steve Johnson in the first round of the tournament.

Kyrgios' latest round of unsportsmanlike antics took place Monday night at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, where the world's number 38 player suffered a stunning defeat to his 104th-ranked American opponent, Bradley Kahn.

"I think it's really up to him where he wants to go and what his potential really holds", the 20-time Grand Slam victor said.

Todd Woodbridge believes Nick Kyrgios is copping extra scrutiny from umpires but doesn't help himself by the way he engages with them.

At another moment Kyrgios served an ace past Klahn and asked Dumusois: "Was that borderline poor?". I am more aggressive now.

Nick Kyrgios reacts after a point against Bradley Klahn.

Wawrinka had chances - he had two break points at 3-3 in the second set - but Coric secured his first ever victory over the Swiss having won the first four games in the decider.

"It's interesting when you watch him, the umpires are watching him more closely than generally they watch the other end", Woodbridge said at the launch of the Australian Open.

He left the court using his mobile phone.

With his low ranking it will take a major turnaround for Kyrgios to pick up a seeding for the Australian Open in January.
