Taylor Swift breaks record for most AMA wins by female artist

Cardi B, who was tied with Drake for the most AMA nominations, won the first award of the night for favorite rap/hip-hop artist.

Her track Look What You Made Me Do, made the death of the singer's old life clear, adding in the song: "I'm sorry, the old Taylor can't come to the phone right now. Why? Oh". Michael Jackson is still the awards' most honoured artist, with 24 wins.

Taylor Swift performed at the AMAs just *days* after releasing the first overtly political statement of her career, and it didn't disappoint.

Swift has already been in the limelight this week after a surprise Instagram post on Sunday in which she broke her long silence on politics and encouraged her more than 112 million followers on the platform to register to vote.

Comedian Billy Eichner called the upcoming midterms "the biggest election of our lifetime" and urged viewers to vote. "I gotta prove people wrong because they said I wasn't going to make it after I had a baby", she said from the stage.

After Kanye stole Taylor's speech when she won Best Music Video, telling the crowd that he thinks Beyoncé was the true victor, the pair haven't liked each other. The pop star also continued to use her superstar platform to remind everyone to get out and vote.

"This award and every single award given out tonight were voted on by the people", said the singer. I can not vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love.

"As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I can not support Marsha Blackburn". Eastern. Other performers include Cardi B, Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood, twenty one pilots and Jennifer Lopez.

And Aretha Franklin was honored with a star-studded performance highlighting the Queen of Soul's gospel roots and her 1972 album Amazing Grace.
