Google, Xiaomi announce Mi Box S Android TV streaming box

This box looks a lot like what we saw earlier this year with the Xiaomi Mi Box 4 and 4c, but here we've got a new remote and the newest version of Android TV, and most importantly for us, it'll be released internationally - available to the U.S. in the process.

The media streaming device streams in 4K and features Android TV 8.1 with Chromecast and Google Assistant functionality. This is along with a Netflix shortcut button for easy access to the video subscription service and a "Live" button likely created to facilitate quick-switching to live TV channels.

There's a new remote control with this smart TV box.

The Mi Box S delivers 4K and HDR video (HDR10, not Dolby Vision) from compatible services. With built-in Chromecast, you can also cast what is on your phone, tablet or PC screen to the TV.

The Xiaomi Mi Box S also has some upgraded specs, including a quad-core CPU with a Mali-450 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, Bluetooth 4.2, one HDMI 2.0A port, one audio out port, and one USB 2.0 port. The Box comes with a powerful processor that lets you play Android games as well which could be downloaded from the Google Play store.

The Mi Box S can be pre-ordered from Walmart for $59.99.

This is the second such partnership between Google and Xiaomi, with the launch of the first US Mi Box in 2016. This streaming gadget joins the slim Xiaomi US portfolio that previously consists of the Mi Power Bank Pro 10000mAh; a few Mi Headphones; the Mi Bluetooth Speaker; a home security camera, action camera, and Mi Sphere Camera, as well as certain lifestyle products.

At a Google event on Tuesday, Xiaomi announced that it would soon begin selling Mi Box S in the United States.
