Johnny Depp Addresses ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Casting Controversy

The Fantastic Beasts franchise is an extension of the Harry Potter universe created by JK Rowling, who said that she was "genuinely happy" to keep Depp on the cast in the wake of the controversy. Director David Yates and writer J.K. Rowling defended the casting choice, and obviously Depp is still in the movie.

Elsewhere in the Collider interview, Depp notes the offer of the role "came out of nowhere" after someone had told him that Rowling wanted to talk to him.

"It was fantastic. It came out of nowhere", Depp said. The fact remains I was falsely accused ...

'Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was, ' she said at the time.

In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Heard's lawyer said: "As the parties agreed in their divorce to resolve future disputes in confidential arbitration, that is the appropriate forum to address Mr Depp's public denials that he abused Ms Heard". I loved it because that's really an arena where you can fly around and try different things and approach a character with a lot more...um...to take someone who is teetering on being a fascist, yeah he's a fascist, he's one of those, but to play him as a sensitive, concerned yet manipulative and powerful wizard.

The British writer released a statement late a year ago, saying 'Based on our understanding of the circumstances, the filmmakers and I are not only comfortable sticking with our original casting, but genuinely happy to have Johnny playing a major character in the movies'. She would not stand up if she didn't know the truth.

Depp has long denied the allegations, saying that he has been "falsely accused". There is one... I got to the end and my jaw dropped. Now, with Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald picking up a few months after the events in NY, we are not only getting introduced to a younger Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) but also getting closer to more links to the Harry Potter series. So it was a gas and I look forward to the next installment'.

Just to hand it off to me with that degree of trust, I was really touched, blown away by that.

How do you feel about Depp's continued involvement in the franchise?
