Red Sox beat Yankees, advance to ALCS

The Red Sox began celebrating, but the Yankees challenged the initial call. Boston did so with class, pure joy and a hint of pettiness.

CC Sabathia became the latest pitcher to put NY in an early hole as rookie manager Aaron Boone again stuck with his starter too long, and the Yankees fell just short of extending their season Tuesday night with a 4-3 loss to the rival Boston Red Sox in Game 4 of their AL Division Series. But not only did they pop bottles-they did so to Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York".

Dent previously threw out the ceremonial first pitch ahead of Game 7 of the AL Championship Series in 2004. Sabathia appealed a five-game suspension from Major League Baseball that would not take effect until next season.

"They got momentum on their side and never really slowed down", Robertson said.

None of it was going to matter because the Yankees' history-making lineup, in the second week of October, had suddenly stopped hitting, and it was because of that the Yankees lost their American League division series to their archrivals.

"This is definitely a different crowd (than 2009-12's postseason runs)", said CC Sabathia.

This was the first playoff meeting between the clubs since then, and the Red Sox once again made themselves right at home in the Bronx.

But it's the Red Sox that win the 2018 season and keep their World Series dreams alive. "We felt the matchup was good for him".

"The way he pitched against them this year, he matches up real well against them", said Cora of Price against the Astros.

Whether fatigue or dead-arm played any part in Severino's less than stellar summer, Martinez's supposed declaration of an injury to the Yankees No. 1 pitcher is not only inflammatory if untrue, but insanely underhanded if indeed accurate - considering Severino credited much of his 2017 success to the Hall of Famer.

"The first game didn't go our way, but we kept battling, and (Saturday), we started good and then we played good the whole game", Didi Gregorius said.

Boone acknowledged some regret in allowing ace Luis Severino to start the fourth inning down 3-0.

Yankees: The 38-year-old Sabathia (9-7, 3.65) will be on 11 days' rest when he makes his 23rd postseason start. "It's awesome how he's getting jobs umpiring in these playoff games". By the time the inning was over, the Red Sox had a 3-0 lead they never relinquished. "I scooted up in the box a little bit, and I was going to be swinging at anything and try to hook anything". He used Christian Vazquez at catcher, despite the fact he hadn't caught Porcello all year, and Vazquez snuck a flyball over the wall in left against Zach Britton - his first homer since June 26 - to extend the Boston lead to 4-0.

Stanton had plenty of company throughout the ALDS, since only Aaron Judge produced consistently, but the Yankees expected more from Stanton, whom they acquired last December in a trade with the Marlins.
