Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic remain on course for Shanghai Masters showdown

One player who will not be in the quarter-finals is Juan Martin del Potro after he hobbled out of the tournament.

Normal order appeared to have been resumed when the Swiss comfortably claimed the first set against Bautista Agut. Nevertheless, the top seed insisted he was content with how he's playing.

Federer, the defending champion, beat Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the second round despite being broken late in the second set.

Djokovic's second-round victory improved his flawless record against the 41st-ranked Chardy to 12-0 in matches played, and 28-0 in sets won.

"In the third set it was just hard, so I'm happy I got through somehow".

Federer will play eighth-seeded Kei Nishikori, a finalist in Tokyo last week, in the quarterfinals.

Third-seeded Del Potro, who has been playing with a cold throughout the week, was playing Borna Coric when he fell near the end of the first set. Nishikori ousted Sam Querrey 7-6 (7), 6-4 on Thursday.

The 30-year-old Del Potro had lengthy treatment and strapping put on his knee, but conceded the match after losing the first set 7-5.

But the unseeded Spaniard earned a piece of personal history after that, winning the second set - the first time he had ever done that against the Swiss maestro.

Djokovic enjoyed a measure of revenge as he booked his spot in the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-0 demolition of Marco Cecchinato.

A Masters event is a level below a Grand Slam, but Djokovic was rapt to crush Cecchinato.

"It's very important I won today after Beijing because it gives me a lot of confidence for a big match that I have", Basilashvili said.

Roger Federer had to overcome a second-set stutter.

But the world number three exploded back to life mid-season, winning Wimbledon, the Cincinnati Masters and US Open.

The 37-year-old Swiss served out the match in just under two hours to keep hopes of a third Shanghai title alive.

Fourth seed Alexander Zverev edged one step closer to qualifying for next month's ATP Finals after a hard-fought 7-5 6-4 win over in-form Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Fifth-seeded Marin Cilic became the highest seed toppled in Shanghai when 48th-ranked Nicolas Jarry of Chile rebounded for a 2-6, 7-6 (6), 7-5 second-round win.
