Ryan Coogler Reportedly Set To Write And Direct 'Black Panther' Sequel

Sources tell Variety that Coogler is on board to write and direct the sequel to the hit superhero tentpole "Black Panther".

Ratifying Marvel fans' hopes for more of the Wakandan setting and storyline that director Ryan Coogler broke open with this year's Black Panther, Coogler reportedly has now agreed to write and direct a sequel to the box office-smashing film. In the acclaimed film, T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns home to the hidden high-tech African nation of Wakanda to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king, following the death of his father.

The first of two films directed by Coogler raked in a whopping $700 million domestically, $1.3 billion in total, and is nearly assured of a place in the yearly "Oscar conversation". The movie is also expected to be in awards contention, as is Coogler for directing.

"The experience of making Black Panther, even before it came out, was a transformative one", Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said at the Produced By conference earlier this summer. The Disney and Fox merger should be complete long before Black Panther 2 starts coming together, so Coogler has a whole host of Marvel characters at his fingertips.

They've chose to only put one of the movies forward for the Best Picture award. As Hollywood Reporter indicated, filmmakers are often drawn into contract negotiations as soon as a film is deemed lucrative, but in the case of Coogler and his creative staff, waited until they were met with ideal terms. It is unknown if "Black Panther 2" will now become his primary focus if he will still tries to squeeze that smaller film in.
