A study commissioned by the Mental Health Foundation found one in ten children aged between ten and fifteen say they have no one to talk to, or would not talk to anyone in school if they felt anxious or sad. Here are some statistics that give you an idea of just how prevalent mental health conditions are among the Australian population.

Victoria reported the highest percentage of young people who experienced high or very high levels of psychological distress (35 per cent) compared Western Australia and South Australia (33 per cent).

She said depression is the third leading cause of disease while suicide is the second leading cause among youths of 15 to 29 years. He urged those close to people with mental illness to remain patient and supportive.


"We can no longer afford to be silenced by stigma or stymied by misguided ideas that portray these conditions as a matter of weakness or moral failing", the article reads. "However, some believe we must begin to focus on the way they deal with men and women differently in order to reach the men who so desperately need help but are afraid to reach out".

It would also be unfair to suggest that this day of recognition doesn't help people, because it does.

"A healthy mind is every bit as important as a healthy body, but the stigma associated with mental health issues is often a huge factor is preventing those struggling, from seeking the right kind of help and support".

The survey of office workers taken by workplace consultant Peldon Rose shows that the almost three-quarters of workers who want their employers to champion mental health and well-being rated this as more important than equality (48 per cent), sustainability (38 per cent) and diversity (31 per cent). "You don't have to be an global artist or the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) to make an impact".

"We are pleased to be promoting new measures today, including the launch of our Mental Health Strategy, as we continue to build structures that will help promote a positive environment for athletes, coaches and support staff".
