Dead babies found hidden in ceiling of former USA funeral home

The State of MI closed down Cantrell Funeral Home, located at the city's east side, six months ago.

- State workers found remains of 11 bodies of babies in the ceiling of the closed Cantrell Funeral Home, according to Detroit police. "And they just went right to the location", a Detroit police spokesperson told local reporters.

Nine bodies were found in a cardboard box, two were found in caskets - all in a hidden section of the ceiling.

The building on the city's east side is being converted into a community centre following its closure in April.

After the bodies were found, police used a cadaver-trained police dog to search the building.

The home's owner, Raymond Cantrell, told Fox 2 Detroit in an April interview that he had taken over the funeral home in 2017 and was doing "a favour to accommodate" customers who could not pay.

An autopsy report from the Wayne County Medical Examiner is forthcoming, however police do have some of the infants' names and are attempting to locate family members, according to Det.

LARA suspended the mortuary science establishment license after state inspectors reported finding decomposing bodies stored in an unrefrigerated garage and a filthy back room.

The funeral home was also accused of several licensing and financial violations, the agency said. "The police responded, they removed the box and the casket from the false ceiling, or the lowered ceiling, and they opened them up and obviously they discovered the remains".

"Whether they're an employee or whether they actually did it, we don't know yet".
