Canelo Alvarez Signs Biggest Sports Contract Ever - 10 Fights for $365M

Canelo Alvarez, 28, agreed to a five-year, 11-fight contract with streaming platform DAZN on Wednesday that will pay him a minimum of $365 million, according to a press release.

His contract surpasses that of Giancarlo Stanton, who signed a 13-year, $325 million pact with the Miami Marlins in 2014.

"This is easily one of the best days in the growing history of Golden Boy Promotions", said Oscar De La Hoya, Golden Boy Promotions Chairman and CEO.

Off the heels of a historic decision victory over Middleweight juggernaut Gennady Golovkin, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has secured himself a $375 million contract with a mandated string of bouts, eleven in total.

Canelo Alvarez not boxing on pay per view anymore is a huge move indeed, one that could genuinely threaten the entire pay per view model of boxing and combat sports in North America.

Alvarez will challenge Rocky Fielding on DAZN's platform on December 15 at Madison Square Garden. "The most important thing to me was being able to give the fans the opportunity to see me fight without having to pay the $70 or $80 for my fights on pay-per-view". We'll see how the weight affects me.

Alvarez previously had a deal with HBO to broadcast his fights on a pay-per-view basis.

It will cost them $9.99 a month for a subscription in the U.S. Under the five-year partnership, Golden Boy also will put on up to 10 fight nights per year that will stream live on DAZN beginning in early 2019. "I know how important I am to any platform I go to".

"It is very important for me to give the fans the biggest fights and the most important fights, and I promise you I will always do that".

ESPN, Turner Sports and Showtime were all thought to be major contenders for the boxer's signature after his deal with HBO finished after the second Golovkin match-up.

Former ESPN boss John Skipper now heads DAZN, which is owned by London based sports media company Perform Group.

Alvarez and Britain's Fielding will hold a news conference in NY on Wednesday to promote their fight at Madison Square Garden.

"I was never anxious because I'm very confident in myself", Canelo said. "We are committed to making this sport as accessible as possible and at an affordable price for all the fans".
