Eric Teitel got his flu shot at his local Walgreens pharmacy.

They're asking them to get flu shots for their children who are 6-months-old or older.

"We're all very open about the fact that the flu vaccine is not the greatest vaccine and we really need to make improvements in it", he said. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends everyone get their flu vaccine now, as influenza often increases at this time of year.

Flu activity remains low across the state, according to the health department, but it's expected to pick up in the coming weeks. The agency estimates more than 900,000 people were hospitalized and more than 80,000 people died from flu last season, which typically runs from October through March in the United States. Most flu deaths are among the elderly, children, pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems. She said the vaccine is updated to protect against viruses it is believed will be circulating during the upcoming season.

Health officials say Kansas has recorded its first flu deaths of the season.

Last year's influenza outbreak might be a reason some groups are going on the offensive this year.

People getting shots should bring along their MCP cards and wear short-sleeved shirts.

The flu, or influenza, is a respiratory disease spread through coughing, sneezing and other direct contact with someone who is infected or contaminated objects. "That has indeed impacted delivery for all types of vaccines, but flu mist is one of those and we are certainly seeing those delays".

Last year's flu vaccination was about 40 percent effective.

"It takes time for your body to get strong and ready for flu season, which is why we recommend everybody get the shot as soon as they can".

"The flu vaccine is the best protection against the flu", said Dr. Moorjani.
