Doctors: You can not get the flu from the flu shot

"Because flu viruses change continuously, we have also invested heavily in this year's flu programme, introducing two new vaccines to offer event great protection to those most at risk", Dr McBride wrote in The Belfast Telegraph. It found last year's shot was only 17 per cent effective in preventing respiratory illness from H3N2 overall, the dominant A strain of influenza, and only 10 per cent effective for adults aged 20 to 64.

The flu vaccine for those older than 65 will be delayed this year, the chief medical officer has said.

The flu season which peaked in around the start of February of this year took approximately 80,000 lives. Last year's flu season was the deadliest in more than 40 years.

If your child can not have a vaccine, the flu mist is back this year.

An overwhelming majority of them had not been vaccinated.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, says everyone over the age of six months should get their flu shot this year, especially people who are most susceptible - such as young children, women who are pregnant, the elderly, people with underlying chronic diseases, including heart or lung disease, and people on medication that suppress their immune system.

That said, Lin noted receiving the vaccine anytime during the season is "better late than never".

What is a common misconception about the flu vaccine?

The role of pharmacists is being expanded this year to allow them to administer the free flu shot to residents five and up, during home visits, and in congregate living settings.

According to Australia's Department of Health, flu activity - measured by the proportion of patients admitted directly to hospital intensive care units and deaths attributed to influenza - has been low to moderate.

While reactions to the flu shot may include a low-grade fever or muscle aches, the vaccine can not cause the flu virus. If people experience flu-like symptoms after getting the shot, it's possible that the shot didn't work, or that you didn't get the shot early enough.
