2 suspects charged in Georgia police officer's slaying

A police officer has died in a shooting in unincorporated Snellville, Gwinnett County Police said.

SWAT teams and K-9 units flooded the area, which consists of residential subdivisions and wooded areas.

Toney, along with other officers, arrived near Shiloh Middle School in Snellville about 2:30 response to a report of "a suspicious vehicle", police said. The 30-year-old from Southern California had been with the Gwinnett County Police Department for almost three years.

"Tafahree Maynard needs to turn himself in", Gwinnett County Police Chief Butch Ayers said at a press conference. A second suspect Tafahree Maynard, 18, has been charged with aggravated assault and felony murder but remains on the loose. Authorities say the suspects crashed their vehicle a short time later and witnesses reported seeing as many as four people running from the scene.

Police said in April 1964, Officers Jerry Everett, Ralph Davis, and Jesse Gravitt were shot and killed investigating suspicious activity in Duluth. That second officer, whose name has not yet been released, pulled Officer Toney out of the line of fire.

An officer who was searching the area encountered Pretlow about 3 p.m. Police say Pretlow pointed a gun at the officer, who fired shots. It was his first police job. Investigators said the bullet missed the vest worn by the 30-year-old officer.

Officer Toney's family and friends erected a memorial for Officer Toney on Saturday and gathered to remember his life on Saturday night.

Police presence was heavy Saturday evening in neighborhoods a few miles east of Stone Mountain as officers, SWAT and K9 teams searched for Maynard.

This is the fifth death the Gwinnett County Police Department has experienced in the line of duty. According to WSB, they remembered him as a jovial man who loved his job as a police officer. "We are mourning the loss with you".
