Here are the winning numbers for the $1 billion Mega Millions jackpot

About 280 million tickets sold in Friday's drawing, none matching the winning mix of 7, 15, 23, 53, 65 and 70 to claim an estimated prize of $1 billion. The second-largest jackpot was a $1.586 billion Powerball drawing on January 13, 2016.

With the jackpot now tied with the record-setting lottery jackpot and bound to grow before the next drawing, it is bound to become the largest prize in US history.

A lucky American could walk away with $1.6 billion (£1.2 billion) in prize money after the latest round of the country's lottery draw failed to produce a victor. "I'd give it away a little at a time - so people don't have to pay more taxes - and make the working people's lives a little better".

The next drawing will be Tuesday.

Russ Lopez, spokesman for the California Lottery, said tickets were going "very, very quickly" on Saturday.

"We tell them how to play it", she said. "They don't know what to do".

The most recent Mega Millions jackpot has been building since it was last hit July 24 and a group of 11 co-workers in California shared a $543 million jackpot.

The game, which was created in 2002, has seen changes over the years that have reduced the chances of winning, meaning bigger and bigger jackpots.

In October 2017, Mega Millions cut the odds of winning from one in 259 million to one in 302.5 million, following a similar move by Powerball.
