Google Play Announces Free 4K Upgrades for Previous Digital Movie Purchases

Google Play Announces Free 4K Upgrades for Previous Digital Movie Purchases

Most 4K Samsung Smart TVs are now able to stream 4K content in the Google Play Movies & TV app, too, something that previously required external hardware like a Chromecast Ultra.

Google has announced several new 4K features and updates for its Google Play Movies & TV streaming service in the United States and Canada.

According to information from Google, 4K content will begin rolling out today with movies and TV shows from participating studios, with more content and additional upgrades in the future as more 4K content becomes available. But as Google just announced, it's upgrading all supported films for customers in the US and Canada to UHD no matter if they were purchased in SD or HD. And to go along with the free 4K upgrades, Google has also announced a price decrease for most 4K movie listings through the platform.

The caveat is that you need to have purchased the film in one of the aforementioned lower resolutions (either HD or SD) and, more importantly, there needs to be an equivalent 4K version on the Google Play Store. 4K movies will now cost you less on Play Movies & TV. Once upgraded, you'll be notified within the app the next time you open it. Google says that it is working to add support for 4K televisions manufactured by LG.

Finally, Google says that it's updated its app for Samsung, LG, and Vizio TVs to give it a "modern look and feel" while also making it better to use.

We think watching in 4K should be a no brainer, so we're continuously working to make that a reality.
