Bound Ryanair Plane Full Of Passengers Seized By French Authorities

French authorities said on Friday they seized a Ryanair plane, forcing 149 London-bound passengers off the aircraft, to get the Irish low-priced airline to repay illegal public aid, the latest in a string of troubles for the carrier.

The French civil aviation authority said Friday it had seized a Ryanair plane to get the Irish low-priced airline to repay illegal public aid, the latest in a string of troubles for the carrier.

Villat added he expected Ryanair to pay the remaining sum by the end of Friday.

'This measure was taken as a last resort by the French authorities after several reminders and attempts to recuperate the money failed, ' the DGAC civil aviation body said.

The plane, bound for London's Stansted airport, was grounded yesterday. Some 149 passengers on board had to wait five hours before being able to take off from the Bordeaux-Merignac airport in another Ryanair aircraft.

The European commission ruled that about €1m of subsidies paid to Ryanair in return for it providing flights from Angoulême, 80 miles (130km) north-east of Bordeaux, to London between 2008 and 2009 were illegal.

The department had the support of France's civil aviation authority, the direction générale de l'aviation civile (DGAC), which said in the press release: "It is regrettable that the State was forced to take this measure, which caused unavoidable inconvenience for the 149 passengers of the immobilised aircraft".

The airline has now entered negotiations with the department over how to repay more than €500,000 at the centre of the dispute, regional newspaper Charente Libre reports.

The airline uses Boeing 737-800 planes, which cost £78.4 million each when new.

HuffPost UK has contacted Ryanair for comment.

The EU also ordered authorities to recoup money from Transavia over benefits they had received at two other French regional airports.
