Republicans maintain grip on the US Senate in midterm vote

President Donald Trump, in a Wednesday tweet, offered support for Ms Pelosi to take the role after the Democratic Party gained control of the House.

"In a stark contrast to the GOP Congress, the Democratic Congress will be led with transparency and openness so that the public can see what is happening and how it affects them", she said in a victory speech to Democrats on Tuesday night. She wants to impress on Americans the importance of the legislative branch as a co-equal branch of government. A record number will serve in the new Congress.

Overturning control of the House in Tuesday's midterm elections has given the Democrats a new weapon to wield against Trump: the subpoena.

Even though the mainstream will tell you the opposite, to a great degree, Trump is better placed for a reelection than before this midterm.

Russian President Vladimir Putin denies any involvement in Trump's election victory, but he may quietly favor a renewed investigation, seeing them as a way to sow chaos and division in America's bitterly divided political arena.

Congressional Democrats on Thursday demanded emergency hearings in the House to investigate Trump's ouster of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, saying it was an effort to undermine the Mueller probe.

But at 78, she knows her storied tenure on Capitol Hill is likely coming to a close, even if she refuses to put a date-stamp on it.

"I just am so honored for the privilege that I've had to be able to represent the people of the 14 Congressional District". According to exit polls, they were about evenly split this year, with 50 percent choosing Democrats, compared to 48 percent who chose Republicans.

Pelosi has campaigned tirelessly this election season. In Kansas, Democrat Laura Kelly defeated Kris Kobach, a staunch Trump ally, where outgoing Republican Governor Sam Brownback suffered from low approval ratings. She also tamped down liberal cries for Trump's impeachment.

But more investigations, Republicans note, could also blow back against the Democrats for the 2020 US election. "It's about our country".

Their lawsuit also has a potential wrinkle that involves another figure of the tense midterm election season - newly confirmed Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Democratic candidates jumped into races, motivated by opposition to the president's agenda and the Republicans' proposed changes to health care. Activists bypassed Pelosi's vast party apparatus, which shoveled $129 million to the Democratic campaign committee, and instead rewarded candidates through online donations and social media promotion. "I mean, I think she could have won that race, but she didn't want to have any embrace".

Ms Pelosi comes from the old school of politics, taught by her father, the former mayor of Baltimore, and her mother, who ran a tight Italian-American household.

Nancy Pelosi shakes hands with Donald Trump on the day of his inauguration.

On Twitter, one of the president's preferred platforms for reaching supporters, Trump has echoed similar messages.

Tuesday's midterm elections, the first nationwide vote since Trump's election in November 2016, will help determine the course of the next two years of his presidency.

He said he will respond in kind if House Democrats flood his administration with subpoenas and the government will come to a halt.

Waters also said that Democrats were now focused on ensuring Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign was protected following a shake-up on Wednesday at the Justice Department. Top-ranking leaders Steny Hoyer and Jim Clyburn are also in their mid-70s.

House Democrats will meet behind closed doors later this month to elect party leaders, and Pelosi is expected to win the most votes in the caucus. At least 87 new congresswomen will enter the House, of whom all but a dozen are Democrats.

Trump, meanwhile, warned Democrats against using their new majority in the House of Representatives to investigate his administration.

The mother of five, who came to the job after raising her family, said she "never used to be such a braggart" but someone has to do it.
