Terrifying moment police shoot knife-wielding man on Bourke Street

"Unfortunately one is dead at the scene, two others are at hospital".

Footage from the scene show a man making stabbing gestures at two uniformed officers near a burning vehicle before he was shot.

Businesses in the are have closed and emergency crews are at the scene.

"The cops were trying to hit him with batons and he wasn't going down", he said.

Counter-terrorism police have been notified, and they are investigating, although there is no immediate indication the incident is terror related.

One of the officers raises his weapon, a shot is heard and the man falls to the ground clutching his chest.

"Police shot the male and he is now in a critical condition and under guard in hospital".

The officers were immediately confronted by a man brandishing a knife and threatening them.

'At the same time, passers-by were calling out that members of the public had been stabbed.
