About two-thirds of the city of Malibu was ordered evacuated early Friday as a ferocious wildfire roared toward the beachside community that is home to about 13,000 residents, some of them Hollywood celebrities.

The fire broke out Thursday northwest of Los Angeles and roared southward, jumping the USA 101 freeway early Friday and sweeping into the Santa Monica Mountains.

Video showed some drivers still traveling on the freeway although fire trucks were blocking most of the lanes.

"Don't. Please do not drive in that area".

Pimlott said six major fires are now burning in California, with three (Camp, Woolsey and Hill) designated "critical".

The flames are now threatening coastal areas further south, fire officials said.

As a result of the fire jumping the freeway, the City of Malibu was placed under mandatory evacuation orders, an emergency alert stated. "Be patient. Have Faith. It's going to take some time", he said.

The Woolsey Fire broke out about 2:25 p.m. Thursday in Ventura County west of Chatsworth, pushed by strong Santa Ana winds.

The Ventura County Fire Department reports structures, outbuildings, and vehicles have been damaged and destroyed. No injuries have been reported.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department has issued mandatory evacuation orders south of the 101 freeway to Mulholland Highway.

The full extent of the destruction is still unknown, but authorities believe up to 1,000 buildings have been destroyed - most of those in Paradise, a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) spokesman said.

Fanned by high winds and fueled by low humidity and dry vegetation, the fires spread rapidly Thursday and overnight into Friday.

About 75,000 homes have been evacuated and, according to the Weather Channel, the entire town of Paradise has been destroyed, which could displace about 27,000 people.

Cal Fire's Bill Murphy says winds have calmed down in the valley but that there are "shifting, erratic winds" with speeds of up to 45mph (72 km/h) along ridge tops.

Fire officials ordered the evacuation of large swaths of the beachside city of Malibu Friday as a raging fire jumped the USA 101 Freeway west of Los Angeles and raced toward the sea and the community famed for its surf and celebrity homes.

Borchard Community Center, Rancho Santa Susana Recreation Center, Camarillo Community Center, Thousand Oaks Teen Center, and Goebel Adult Community Center are open in Ventura County. Also shut down were the schools of the Conejo Valley School District, headquartered in Thousand Oaks, and the Los Angeles Unified School District's Topanga Elementary Charter School.
