By the time it was over, 12 people were dead, and gunman Ian David Long was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police say that gunman Ian David Long, a 28-year-old Marine veteran, used a handgun with an illegal extended magazine to carry out the killings before turning the gun on himself.

Witnesses have described chaotic scenes as the bar - packed mostly with local university students - as victims attempted to flee the shooter. He was shot several times as he tried to stop the gunman. Though he was pulled out of the line of fire, he died in hospital yesterday.

An emotional Sheriff Geoff Dean talked about his friend. He gave his all. I don't know what was going through his head when he wrote this. "He went in to save lives, to save other people".

"He had ideal form", bar patron Teylor Whittler told Fox News.

"It was really, really shocking..."

"He said, 'hon, I got to go, I love you".

Ms Whittler said she didn't have time "to think about why this is happening", and just focused on a way to "get out". "He was so excited to have his first sister - now she'll never know". Kuredjian said he didn't know the content of any posts. "He changed them within about six seconds, which was really fast", she said.

But implementation of the ban was blocked by a lawsuit filed by the California Rifle and Pistol Association, the state branch of the National Rifle Association, or NRA, and five Calfornia residents, media reports said.

The southern California slaughter came on the heels of another massacre, when Robert Bowers, who openly spewed extreme anti-Semitic invective, allegedly burst into a Pittsburgh synagogue and killed 11 Jewish worshippers.
