White Sox’ Jose Abreu wins second Silver Slugger Award

Boston's three Silver Sluggers are tied with the Colorado Rockies for the most in 2018.

Martinez is first player to receive two Silver Slugger Awards in one season. (Note that the outfield is not broken down by left, center, and right designations.) Louisville Slugger is, naturally, the sponsor to the award.

White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu won his second American League Silver Slugger Award on Thursday, given to the best hitters at each position in each league.

He spent most of his time as Boston's DH, hitting.297 with 27 homers and 79 RBIs to go with a.970 OPS in 93 games at the position. At least he is cleaning up elsewhere, winning the Hank Aaron Award last month as the AL's best offensive performer.

Betts surely couldn't have set that career high without J.D. Martinez, who managed to exceed expectations in his first season with the Red Sox. It's also worth noting that the Silver Slugger does not differentiate between outfield positions.

In fact, he finished with a slash line of.330/.402/.629 with 43 home runs, a whopping 130 RBI, 37 doubles, six stolen bases, two triples, 111 runs scored and 69 walks in 649 plate appearances. Betts and Evans are the only players ever to win multiple Silver Slugger Awards and multiple Gold Glove Awards in a Red Sox career.

In 2018, Betts led the majors in batting average (.346) and slugging percentage (.640), becoming the first Red Sox player to accomplish that feat since Williams in 1957.
