The new BMW M340i is the fastest non-M 3 Series

Although as yet unconfirmed, we can expect the M340i to be followed by a Touring version and also an M440i for the two-door line-up. Variable Sport Steering, now standard, is more responsive than ever.

Following its debut at the LA Motor Show, the M340i will only go on sale in the global market by July 2019. Regardless of which wheels are driven, the M340i comes exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Of course, familiar safety functions like dynamic stability control, traction control and ABS brakes are standard as well. Torque now peaks at 369lb ft, helping the M340i to hit 62mph half a second earlier than the previous quickest non-M3 3 Series, the 340i (of the now discontinued F-generation) - although, again, some of the gains made in away-from-the-line performance can be attributed to the standard fitment of xDrive.

Buyers can also opt for the Adaptive M Suspension featuring electronically controlled dampers, delivering damping force to each wheel separately thru continuously variable valves. It incorporates a double-joint spring strut front axle and a five-arm rear axle, and sits 10mm closer to the ground on M Sport suspension and bespoke damper settings. BMW also says it has improved the steering. The 19-inch M light alloy wheels come with high-performance tyres facilitating a particularly effective transfer of longitudinal and lateral forces. Extra vents at the front are said to "optimise both the cooling air supply and aerodynamics", while model-exclusive styling elements include a colour-coded rear spoiler and trapezoidal exhaust.

As you'll see in these new images, the 2020 BMW M340i distinguishes itself with a special mesh grille. Furthermore, the front bumpers get an aggressive chiselled look and distinct Cerium Grey metallic trim finishes which are seen all around the auto.

The M340i's design also sets it apart from the rest of the range. Inside the cabin, there are standard sport seats in vinyl and Alcantara upholstery, or optional leather seats with contrast stitching.
