Lily James, Armie Hammer to star in ‘Rebecca’ adaptation

British filmmaker Ben Wheatley (High-Rise) is set to direct a new adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's classic 1938 novel Rebecca that will star Lily James and Armie Hammer, Collider has learned.

Rebecca follows a young woman who comes to live with her new wealthy husband in his estate on the coast of England and finds herself struggling to fight against the legacy of Maxim's first wife, Rebecca, a mysterious and attractive woman whose influence continues to haunt the house and its denizens. The plot takes lost of twists and turns, and dark secrets are uncovered - which made it ideal fodder for Hitchcock, whose film adaptation won the Academy Award for best picture in 1941 and has since become a classic film. Jane Goldman ("Kingsman" series, "X-Men: First Class") will write the screenplay.

James is coming off the summer box office hit Mamma Mia! She also starred in Disney's live-action Cinderella and played the female lead in Baby Driver, which was produced by Working Title and Park.

Lily James is attached to star as the second Winter; the novel is told from her first-person perspective and we never learn her first name. Still, he has form with Hammer after Free Fire and it'll be fascinating to see what he and Goldman have up their sleeves to put their stamp on the tale famously brought to cinema screens in 1940 by one Alfred Hitchcock. Hammer will next be seen opposite Felicity Jones in Mimi Leder's "On The Basis of Sex", and then Anthony Maras' "Hotel Mumbai" with Dev Patel and an untitled project from Babak Anvari. Wheatley is repped by WME, Independent Talent Group and Bloom Hergott.
