Lion Air crash victim's father files USA lawsuit against Boeing

Boeing and the FAA are in discussions regarding the need for design or software changes in the jet.

Boeing issued a global safety bulletin last week after a 737 MAX 8 jet crashed into the Java Sea after departing Jakarta, killing 189 passengers and crew.

Lion Air's flight manual did not contain information about the new anti-stall system, according to investigators and an airplane flight manual seen by Reuters.

SCHAPER: Boeing does not acknowledge any such omission of critical safety information from its 737 MAX training manuals.

The Boeing 737 Max 8 plane serving Lion Air JT 610 crashed 13 minutes after take off from worldwide airport of Soekarno-Hatta on October 29, killing all 189 people onboard.

When the angle of attack sensors - which detect how wind is meeting the wing - perceive incorrect readings the plane may think it is experiencing an aerodynamic stall, causing it to dive.

After Boeing and the FAA highlighted how the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System works and pointed to an existing emergency procedure to counter any malfunctions by it, pilots in the US said they should have been given more information.

Lion Air says it followed a training regime approved by USA and European regulators.

Southwest Airlines Co., the biggest operator of the 737 Max 8, replaced two malfunctioning flight-control sensors of the same type during the three weeks before the Lion Air craft, the Wall Street Journal said, citing a summary of the USA carrier's maintenance record it reviewed.

"They (Boeing) didn't provide us all the info we rely on when we fly an aircraft", Capt. Dennis Tajer, a spokesman for the APA group, told CNN on Tuesday.

Zwingli said that if the result of the ongoing investigation - conducted by Indonesia's National Transportation Commission, the US National Transportation Safety Board and Boeing - found that additional training was necessary, Lion Air pilots would undertake it.

The most hyped features of the 737 MAX compared with its predecessor, the 737NG, are more fuel-efficient engines. Safety remains its top priority, it said.

While we can't discuss specifics of an on-going investigation, we have provided two updates for our operators around the world that re-emphasize existing procedures for these situations. This comes after the deadly crash of one of those planes in Indonesia last month.
