Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez commits to paying her interns $15 an hour

While the office of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said its recent posting for unpaid internships was "made in error" and announced paid positions will be announced in January, fellow NY lawmaker in the House, Rep. -elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, declared Tuesday night that it's time for Democrats to "walk the walk" on paying Capitol Hill interns a living wage and said that her office will pay $15 per hour "at least" for those who come to work for her.

"Time to walk the walk", the Democratic Congresswoman-elect tweeted on Tuesday.

In a 2017 report, Carlos Vera and Daniel Jenab of Pay Our Interns found that only eight percent of Republicans and 3.6 percent of Democratic members of the House offer paid internships (the numbers are higher for the Senate, however: 51 percent of the GOP and 31 percent of the Dems pay their interns).

"Very few members of Congress actually pay their interns".

If that's the case, they can cut down on staff to pay them well.

The percentages were even lower in the House, as only 8 percent of House Republicans opted to pay their interns compared to 3.6 percent of House Democrats. Most interns go unpaid in the nation's capital; unsurprisingly, more Republicans now offer paid internships than Democrats.

"I was fighting not to fall asleep", he said of his 2012 internship with former Rep. Joe Baca (D-California), which he held while he was also working as a front-desk assistant at American University. Kamala Harris, Virginia Democrat Mark Warner and New York Democrat Chuck Schumer.

Compensation rates are $13.25 per hour.

At least Ocasio-Cortez can boast of some level of ideological consistency, however ridiculous the ideology happens to be at the moment.

"She can not do either because she doesn't understand how the world works", she explained, "how people make money, how money is created, and the creation of money is actually a positive sum effort where more people thrive when more people make money!" "We will be one of them". Marco Rubio and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz told Fox Business that he is paying his interns, though the individual would not say "how much or whether all interns are included". However, a spokesperson for Ted Cruz disputed that with Fox Business.
