Blitzboks want to get back to winning ways

The New Zealand men's rugby sevens team has won the opening leg of the World Series in Dubai.

Geduld has recovered from a head injury which cut short his participation in the Dubai Sevens.

The final was a rematch of a Pool C game from the day before, and it was New Zealand who again emerged victorious with a comfortable win.

The players in the Springbok Sevens team took full responsibility for the hiccup in Dubai, where an individualistic approach in the opening matches of last week's tournament led to the less than ideal start to the season for the Blitzboks.

All-time leading points scorer Cecil Afrika and all-time try-scoring leader Seabelo Senatla are two absentees while the likes of tough forwards Kwagga Smith‚ Tim Agaba and Dylan Sage are also out of sevens.

"We're obviously very disappointed to lose Ollie and Richard this weekend and we have a very physical pool for Cape Town, so recovery this week has been key to ensure we're in the best place possible heading into the weekend", he continued.

'Knowing the players, they will all be desperate to correct last weekend's disappointments and they get a chance to redeem themselves this week'.

"We are really happy to play in Cape Town this weekend and I think, especially coming off a not so good Dubai tournament, the guys will be ready and fired up and we believe we will be successful this weekend".

The next round is in South Africa next weekend with New Zealand drawn against the hosts, Samoa and Zimbabwe.

"Everybody knows a little more of each other than was the case last week, so it will be tougher to break down defences, no doubt. That said‚ we know we can only improve from last week and that is a nice prospect".

Limited tickets for Saturday are still available at Computicket (online and outlets countrywide), but the expectation is that all available seats will be sold out when the first match, between Scotland and Canada, kicks off at 10h15.
