Cardinals To Acquire Paul Goldschmidt From Diamondbacks

Officials with Arizona Cardinals announced Wednesday that 1st Baseman Paul Goldschmidt has been traded to the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Cardinals sent catcher Carson Kelly, right-hander Luke Weaver, minor league infielder Andy Young and the Cardinals' Compensation Round B selection in the 2019 Major League Baseball amateur draft to Arizona.

In 2018, Goldschmidt hit.290 with 83 RBI and 33 home runs.

Goldschmidt, 31, has been a National League All-Star each of the past six seasons and he's a four-time (2013, 2015, 2017, 2018) NL Silver Slugger award victor and three-time (2013, 2015, 2017) Rawlings Gold Glove award recipient. As a result, the Cardinals offense was good in 2018, but not good enough - they ranked fifth in the National League in runs, eighth in on-base percentage and seventh in slugging percentage.

Goldschmidt has just one year remaining on his contract at $14.5 million, a club option the D-Backs exercised at the end of October.

The Cardinals know how to play this game. Weaver recorded 25 starts with a 4.95 ERA and 121 strike outs.
