Nokia 8.1 announced: X7 for the West

Though the phone will be launched in India on December 10, all the specifications and expected price will be out after today's event.

The Nokia 8.1 also runs Android 9 Pie (specifically the Android One version), so it's both up-to-date and should get speedy updates in future.

The Nokia 8.1 has just been announced, and on paper it has got a lot of high points considering its £379.99 (roughly $485 / AU$665) price. Coming to the pricing, the new Nokia 8.1 will be on sale starting mid-December for Euro 399 (approx Dollars 450 / INR 31,900). It translates to Rs 32,000 in India. The smartphone, as expected, is indeed the global variant of the Nokia X7 that was launched in China in October, and the spiritual successor to the Nokia 7 Plus. The rear camera comes with features such as Optical Image Stabilization, Electronic Image Stabilization, dual PDAF, AI scene detection and optimization for low-light photography. For the camera duties, the smartphone comes with an 8-megapixel sensor with f/2 aperture and 85-degree field of view at the front. Internally, the phone is powered by the Snapdragon 636 processor which is coupled with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage.

-The new Nokia 8.1 features slightly bigger notch similar to the one seen on an iPhone X. The smartphone will be a dual-SIM (Nano) one with a 6.18-inch full-HD+ display with an 18.7:9 aspect ratio, 86.5 percent screen-to-body ratio, and 2.5D curved glass. Like other Nokia phones, the Nokia 8.1 also comes with the Bothie camera feature which uses the front and rear cameras at the same time.

HMD has gotten some help from Zeiss on the cameras on the Nokia 8.1. It is capable of recording 4K videos at 30 fps with OIS.

Joseph Umunakwe, General Manager at HMD Global, West, East and Central Africa, said: "With Nokia 5.1 Plus we wanted to bring exciting gaming and entertainment experiences closer to a wider group of Ghanaians".

-The Nokia 8.1 event has started. Most of the phones from HMD Global, fall under the mid-range segment and that's where it is most comfortable.
