'Royal Mail' Christmas delivery as duke and duchess visit troops in Cyprus

The Duchess told the military families at the children's party that, as the wife of "someone whose husband has served", she understood "how it feels when a loved one leaves home to do the job they're trained for".

Prince William said that his experience in the armed forces, most recently as an RAF search and rescue pilot, meant "we both know a bit of what it feels like".

The proud parents chatted happily about their children, with William telling pilots: 'I told George this morning we were going to see the pilots today, and he said "If you see a helicopter can you take a picture?"'

They seemed to love it and looked so shocked!

Children's entertainer George Whitefield, who put on the event, said Prince William 'saw I had some in my hand and he had a little mischievous nod and wink and looked like he wanted one to throw back at us'.

He went on to quip 'Do you want me to move out of the photo?', in order to let Kate pose by herself. "On behalf of everyone back home, we would like to say thank you".

Mrs Macdonald, who said her son-in-law was at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus while her daughter was in Afghanistan, added: "Kate was asking Harry where his mummy and daddy were and she said to me it's quite a commitment but it was great for the family to have us pulling everything together". Five-year-old Harry is being looked after for six months by his grandparents.

And Kate took inspiration from Meghan with the fashion choice as she travelled to Cyprus with William on Wednesday to thank personnel working overseas away from their families over Christmas.

They met personnel from 11 and 31 Squadrons, operating Typhoon and Tornado aircraft, who have been flying missions in support of Operation SHADER, the UK's contribution to the ongoing campaign against Isis in Syria and Iraq.

He also praised the sacrifices of their families, many of whom the couple had met on Tuesday, when they held a party at Kensington Palace and collected gifts to transport to the base.
