Satellite images show activity at North Korean missile base

CNN said while the missile base has always been known to U.S. intelligence agencies and analysts, the satellite images show construction on a new facility just miles away from the older site that had not been previously publicly identified.

According to CNN, the imagery offers evidence the Yeongjeo-dong missile base and a nearby, previously unreported site remain active and have been continuously upgraded.

While the base at Yeongjeo-dong has always been known to U.S. intelligence agencies and analysts, researchers at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey told CNN that the images reveal construction on a new facility just seven miles away from the older site that had not been previously publicly identified.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will hold talks in Washington on Thursday to discuss North Korea's denuclearization among other issues, it was announced here. The location of the missile bases means it is likely to be a launch site for North Korea's newest long-range missiles, including ones that can carry nuclear warheads, according to analysts who reviewed the images.

"Construction on the previously unidentified site has continued even after the Singapore Summit" between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump in June, Jeffrey Lewis of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey told CNN.

People lie, satellite images don't-hence why the US and South Korea are closely monitoring a new suspected missile site near North Korea's central border with China.

He suggested the meeting could happen in January or February and that the U.S. could continue to enforce the economic sanctions it imposed on North Korea over its weapons program.

"They have not lived up to the commitments so far", Bolton said.

The State Department declined to comment to the news outlet.
