Former Pirates Player Jose Castillo Killed In Crash In Venezuela

Former Cubs infielder Luis Valbuena was killed in an auto accident Thursday night in his native Venezuela.

Castillo was 37-years-old. Both played for the team on Thursday before the accident.

According to media accounts from Venezuela, the crash occurred in Yaracuy.

Valbuena, who played for the Cubs from 2012-14 and was popular among his teammates, and former major leaguer Jose Castillo were killed when their vehicle collided with a rock that rolled onto a road, according to the Orange County Register.

Valbuena was now a free agent, but he spent his last two seasons with the Los Angeles Angels. He hit.199 with a.253 on-base percentage, a.335 slugging percentage, nine homers and 33 RBIs in 96 games for Los Angeles this year.

Valbuena, an infielder, played for five Major League Baseball clubs, most recently the Angels in 2017 and 2018. "Our thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones during this time of grief". He split 2008 between the Giants and Astros, then finished his career by playing three professional seasons in Japan.

Castillo last played in the big leagues in 2008, appearing in 15 games for the Houston Astros. He recorded a.254 batting average with 39 home runs and 218 RBI during his career.

He played mostly second base and third base.

Carlos Rivero, who played briefly with the Red Sox in 2014, was injured.
