Bush to lie in state in Capitol Rotunda

In 2007, Bush shared his wartime experiences in the Navy during World War II.

Trump did not attend the last major funeral in Washington, that of former Sen.

The president will be honored with a state funeral on Wednesday.

The 41st president of the US served from 1989 to 1993 and watched his son, George W. Bush, win election as the 43rd president of the USA eight years later. His presidency saw the Exxon Valdez oil spill, the Tiananmen Square massacre, the fall of the Berlin wall, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the negotiation of NAFTA and the onset of the Gulf War. 'Thousand points of light?' I never got that one.

Bush's popularity soared after the USA success in the 1991 Gulf War, but a short, deep recession curtailed his approval ratings, and the Republican lost his bid for re-election to Democrat Bill Clinton.

"President Bush is a personal hero of mine and a major inspiration in my life".

The cause of death has not yet been revealed but Bush had a form of Parkinson's disease and had been hospitalised several times for pneumonia and other infections in recent years. His wife, Barbara Bush, died this past April. He had also dealt with thyroid and respiratory problems as his overall condition declined, leading to numerous health scares through which he persevered.

"America has lost a patriot and humble servant in George Herbert Walker Bush".

Sen. Susan Collins of ME described a U.S. Navy anchor monument in the coastal town of Kennebunkport - a gift from the community to Bush, who had an estate there.

The Trumps were informed of Mr Bush's death at the age 94 late on Friday while in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for the Group of 20 summit of rich and developing nations.

Former President Jimmy Carter said the Republican's administration "was marked by grace, civility and social conscience". The Democrat added that through the Points of Light initiative that Bush founded, which promotes volunteerism, he embraced "a uniquely American volunteer spirit" and bipartisan support.

We again extend our heartfelt condolences to the Bush family.

A state funeral for the former president will be held Wednesday morning at Washington's National Cathedral.
