Derek Fisher To Become Head Coach Of LA Sparks

The Los Angeles Sparks are excited to announce the hiring of five-time National Basketball Association champion Derek Fisher as head coach.

Fisher previously coached the NBA's New York Knicks.

Fisher's tenure as a head coach in the National Basketball Association did not go well, posting a 40-96 record in a bit more than a season and a half. He is the winningest coach in WNBA history.

The 44-year-old Fisher is being welcomed by two-time MVP Candace Parker.

He fills the void created when Brian Agler, who reigned in November after four seasons, including leading Los Angeles to the WNBA championship in 2016. The Sparks were 19-15 in 2018, falling to the Washington Mystics in the second round of the playoffs.

He went 17-65 in his first full season as head coach. Over the course of his career, he averaged 8.3 points and 3.0 assists per game on 39.9 percent shooting.

The former Los Angeles Lakers guard hopes to replicate the Sparks' glory days under Agler.

Fisher, 44, helped the Los Angeles Lakers win five National Basketball Association titles during his 18-season playing career and served as president of the players' union. He also played two seasons with the Golden State Warriors.

This will be Fisher's second coaching job since his retirement from playing in 2014.
