Former US secretary of state Rex Tillerson says Trump is ‘undisciplined’

"I didn't know how to conduct my affairs with him any other way than in a very straightforward fashion, and I think he grew exhausted of me being the guy every day that told him, 'You can't do that, '" he said.

Absence does not make the heart grow fonder when it comes to President Donald Trump and his first secretary of state, Rex Tillerson.

"I can tell you who is going to win", Trump said then.

The former ExxonMobil CEO said he didn't know how to conduct himself with Mr. Trump except in "a really straightforward fashion".

Trump praised Tillerson's successor, the brusque former congressman and Central Intelligence Agency chief Mike Pompeo, for "doing a great job".

"His predecessor, Rex Tillerson, didn't have the mental capacity needed", Trump continued. He was lazy as hell. Tillerson said he offered to lobby Congress to pass legislation enabling the president to get what he wanted legally.

In October 2017, as Tillerson was negotiating with the rogue nuclear nation's leader Kim Jong Un, Trump tweeted that his secretary of state was "wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man".

But he declined to do so, he said, during a rare public appearance in Houston, according to reports in local media.

Tillerson apparently did not elaborate on what the president asked him to do that he viewed as illegal. (Although Trump's interest in civics is probably below replacement level even among that group.) Plus, electing a guy who did go to a very good law school and does, in theory, know the rules is no guarantee of better results in every circumstance.

Mr Tillerson's tenure ended in ignominy 13 months after it began, with a firing via presidential tweet just hours after the secretary returned from an official trip to Africa. "Now it is a whole new ballgame, great spirit at State".

"I would have to say to him: "Mr. President I understand what you want to do but you can't do it that way".

However, Tillerson led a demoralized State Department that saw its role vastly diminished, with several high-profile posts unoccupied and many allies questioning the efficacy of dealing with a diplomat they suspected never had Trump's ear.

Saying Mr Trump won office using modern-day tools to tap into strong emotions, he added, "I will be honest with you".
