Grace Millane: Police start murder inquiry

Grace Millane: Police start murder inquiry

Late this afternoon police announced they were questioning a man about the murder of Grace Millane, 22, who was last seen in Auckland's CBD a week ago.

Miss Millane's body has not yet been found, but Det Insp Beard said police were "determined to do all we can to find her".

'He was brought back to the Auckland Central Police Station and is now speaking to us in relation to the murder of Grace Millane. We are determined to find her...

Ms Millane, 22, went missing from a hostel in Auckland on December 1.

Members of Millane's family have made appeals on Facebook for information.

Investigators had said yesterday that they held "grave fears" for Grace's safety.

"Everyone who is a parent out there will understand and appreciate what the family is going through".

David Millane, father of missing British tourist Grace Millane, speaks to the media as police give updates on the investigation.

"I want to reassure everyone, both here and overseas, that New Zealand Police are determined to do everything we can to find her".

"I want to reassure everyone, both here and overseas, that New Zealand Police are determined to do everything we can to find her".

"We still do not know where Grace is, we are determined to find her and return her to her family", Inspector Beard said.

Det Insp Beard confirmed that the man being questioned by police on Saturday was the same individual.

Miss Millane, who graduated from the University of Lincoln in September, had been travelling alone in New Zealand for two weeks, following a six-week group trip through South America.

Auckland City Police Detective Inspector Scott Beard said: "Detectives have assessed Grace's belongings that were found at the backpackers where she was staying".

Millane's father David, a millionaire property developer, flew into New Zealand early yesterday.

The last confirmed sighting of Grace is still 9.41pm Saturday night going into the CityLife Hotel, Beard said.

"Grace is still missing and we want to find her", he added.

Millane called his daughter a "fun-loving, family-oriented daughter" and urged anyone with information to contact police.

She had daily contact with her loved ones via social media but her father, David Millane, said the family last heard from her on December 1.

"We've spoken to David [Grace's father] we've met him, but there is family in the United Kingdom and our hearts go out to them as well".

Police released images of Ms Millane's watch and necklace earlier on Saturday.

They are trawling through hours of CCTV footage to trace her movements.

He wouldn't speculate where Grace was killed, Beard said.
