Amazon's Jeff Bezos worth $150bn announces divorce from wife MacKenzie

Amazon's Jeff Bezos worth $150bn announces divorce from wife MacKenzie

The couple have been married 25 years and have four children together.

Couples who have been together for a long time face a lot of the same obstacles that other couples do, licensed clinical psychologist John Mayer, author of Family Fit: Find Your Balance in Life, tells Yahoo Lifestyle.

Exactly what Bezos pays out his soon-to-be ex-wife Mackenzie Bezos will depend on the complexities of marital law and the value of Amazon, estimated to be worth US$137b (NZ$200b). Washington state is a community property state, meaning that wealth accrued during the marriage would be split equally between the two parties. They married in 1993 and a year later drove across the country to Seattle, where Jeff founded Amazon.

Amazon has since evolved from an upstart website selling books to an e-commerce goliath that sells virtually all imaginable merchandise and runs data centres that power many other digital services such as Netflix. He owns just under 80 million shares of the company, just under 16 percent, according to regulatory filings. Jocelyn won $2.5 billion in their divorce settlement.

The divorce, which could become one of the most expensive in history, could potentially affect Bezos's stake in Amazon.

Bezos, 54, the Class of 1982 Miami Palmetto High School graduate and that year's Miami Herald Silver Knight victor, wrote that he and wife, MacKenzie, had chose to part.

The Bezoses announced their breakup Wednesday in a tweet signed by both spouses. Her father worked as a financial planner.

"It makes my life wonderful in many ways, but that's not the lottery I feel defined by".

Last year, the couple launched the Bezos Day One Fund, offering a two billion dollar fund to help homeless families and build pre-schools in low-income neighbourhoods. Three months after getting engaged, they were married and planning to move across the country so he could start up Amazon in 1994.

Reports in the United States claimed shares in Amazon dropped shortly after the couple announced they were parting ways after a quarter of a decade.

The world's richest man Jeff Bezos is putting his coveted "wealthiest" title in jeopardy, with the announcement that he is to divorce his wife of 25 years, MacKenzie Bezos.
