Xiaomi releases the Redmi Note 7: a budget smartphone with few compromises

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 660 is powering the handset, and around back you'll find an impressive 48MP + 5MP dual camera combo.

Xiaomi recently confirmed that Redmi will be operated as a separate brand from now on. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC, which is an octa-core processor fabricated using 14nm process with Kryo 260 cores and Adreno 512 GPU.

According to Redmi's first release, "Once launched, the Redmi mobile phone series has become a popular and cost-effective "national mobile phone".

The back of the smartphone is also covered with 2.5D curved glass and it actually looks quite lovely in Fantasy Blue and Twilight Gold color gradients. It will be available in Blue, Gold, and Twilight Black color options.

If you're interested, preorders for the Redmi Note 7 open today and it'll hit store shelves on January 15 with a starting price of RMB 999 (about $150 USD) for 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Users also have the option to expand the storage up to 256 GB via microSD card. The Redmi Note 7 not only packs better hardware, it even gets a more premium build and a much longer warranty. Sadly, Xiaomi did not launch the Note 7 with 128GB of internal storage.

The new Redmi Note 7 comes with a 48-megapixel rear primary camera (Samsung GM1 sensor) which has an aperture of f/1.8 and another 5-megapixel for depth-sensing. It is important to note that the Redmi Note 7 India launch details are yet to be revealed by Xiaomi, but like all Redmi Note phones, we believe the Redmi Note 7 will also hit the Indian shores. The MIUI camera app comes with various Artificial Intelligence-based features such as AI Portrait mode, AI scene detection, beauty mode and so on. The battery of this device is a generous 4000mAh and it supports Quick Charge 4 thanks to the USB Type-C port that's finally making an appearance on a Redmi phone. USB-C, headphone jack, IR-blaster, gotta catch em all.
