2019 iPhones: Three new handsets, one with a triple-rear-camera setup

Apple is planning to release three new iPhones to succeed its 2018 lineup, indicating the iPhone XR - unlike the SE and 5C before it, isn't simply a one-off. Huawei's Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro, launched past year, carry three rear cameras.

The problem is that even if Apple now wanted to pivot away from releasing an iPhone with an LCD display, it's likely too late in the planning cycle for Apple to make any significant changes. The three-camera setup supposedly won't be available on the regular, 5.8-inch iPhone 11, which would also be a major differentiator unlike last year's iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max where the hardware was practically the same.

However, the cited source indicates that Apple will actually ditch LCD versions of the iPhone next year, so in the long term, the company only wants to offer OLED iPhones.

According to the Wall Street Journal's sources, the firm will be implementing a triple camera system on the highest end iPhone - presumably the iPhone XS Max successor. As we settle into 2019, eyes are once again turning to the Cupertino tech giant to get a feel for where it plans to take the iPhone this fall. Mr Cook also acknowledged that consumers in other markets are not buying as numerous latest iPhones.

Apple will include a high-end model in its line-up that features three cameras on its back. It's not clear from the reports what Apple's purported third lens would bring to the table - although it may relate to Apple's AR ambitions.

The discounting, as steep as $118 (92.50 pounds) for the recently launched 64GB iPhone XR, is the latest sign that Apple's weak holiday sales in China may have extended to the current quarter.

It is considering a triple-lens camera design for its most expensive new smartphone, while the cheaper model could benefit from a rear dual-lens camera system.
