In inauguration speech, Newsom calls for 'woman's right to choose'

Media outlets take a look at Gov. Gavin Newsom's proposal for health care, including reinstating the individual mandate for Californians and taking steps toward a universal coverage system.

Newsom put out a campaign ad past year calling the president's proposed border wall a "monument to idiocy" and referred to Trump as a "small, scared bully".

California suffered a deadly and devastating 2018 wildfire season. In his first budget this week, the governor is expected to revive ideas to improve access that fell flat under predecessor Jerry Brown. Governor Gavin Newsom delivers his inaugural address as his son Dutch, 2, walks on stage on January 7, 2019 in Sacramento, California. Many believe Newsom also harbours ambitions for national politics, and a charming moment with his family won't have done those any damage.

California lawmakers last year approved a fresh $1 billion over five years for forest management activities.

Newsom will announce his actions Tuesday at a state emergency operations centre in a Sierra Nevada foothills community at high risk for fire.

The dispute comes a day after Newsom joined the governors of Washington and OR in sending a letter to Trump asking for more federal dollars to clean up forests.

President Trump has repeatedly threatened to cut federal grants to California; citing the state's "illegal" and "unconstitutional" policies that bar local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration agents.

In addition, Newsom's new budget "proposes increasing the size of the subsidies for families who already receive it, and it would make California the first state to make subsidies available to middle income families", his office said.

"Unless they get their act together, which is unlikely, I have ordered FEMA to send no more money. I hear you, I get it, we have to do more", Newsom said. A November wildfire destroyed the town of Paradise, Calif., and killed 86 people.
