'Coming To America 2' Is Officially Happening, With Eddie Murphy To Star

The original Coming to America starred Murphy as Akeem, an African prince who travels to America to find a wife who will love him for him, rather than his immeasurable wealth and royal status.

Apparently numerous original characters will return as well, including Arsenio Hall as Akeem's assistant Seemi, Shar Headley, whom Akeem found in New York, John Amos, who played her father, and James Earl Jones, who depicted Akeem's father the king.

Since 2017's news, Murphy has moved into an executive producer role.

Part of the reason that Brewer landed the gig was his recent involvement with Eddie Murphy, having just directed the actor in the upcoming Netflix film, Dolemite Is My Name.

The sequel, which has been in development hell for years, will see Akeem learn that he has a long-lost son.

Murphy confirmed the news Friday, saying that he was "thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward", according to Entertainment Weekly.

The script, which was originally written by Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield, is being revamped by black-ish writer Kenya Barris.

The original Coming To America was a hit all the way back in 1988 - aka, the era when Eddie Murphy still made unquestionably good movies. Murphy was apparently eager to work with Brewer again and Coming to America 2 provided that opportunity.

There's nothing further to report at this time, but Deadline says Coming to America 2 is expected to go into production sometime this year. "From Hustle and Flow to his work with Eddie on Dolemite Is My Name, he never fails to blow me away".

Coming To America, which debuted in theaters in 1988, made almost $300 million worldwide. "He is a true auteur and we couldn't be more thrilled to have him on board". Let us know in the comments!
