Man Utd begin talks to sign Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona

They report that the former Liverpool star - who has been linked with a shock switch to Manchester United - is edging closer to a sensational Catalonia exit just a year after joining the club from the Reds.

The attacking midfielder was bought for €140 million (R2.23 billion) plus add-ons from Liverpool in the previous January window but has since failed to live up to expectations.

Coutinho has scored six goals and registered four assists in 24 games across all competitions this season.

Coutinho instantly won silverware upon his move last season, joining up with a Barca side who were well in front in the race for the La Liga title.

Reports coming from the player's camp reports that the 26-year-old is not happy with his current situation at Barca, but is not considering a move at the moment.

Family ties also play a role in the situation, with Coutinho and his partner Aine recently welcoming their second daughter into the world in Barcelona.

However, he has found life more hard in his second season and has started only one of Barca's last five fixtures: the 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham in December when coach Ernesto Valverde picked a weakened XI with first place in the group already secured.

"When I wasn't playing Dembele everyone asked about him", Valverde said after the game, as per Marca.

"He is not happy, he has to fight, but one or the other nearly always plays and Coutinho gives us a lot and will give us a lot".

TUKO.co.ke earlier reported that Philippe Coutinho was on target in Barcelona's 2-1 defeat to Levante in the first leg of the round of 16 clash at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia on Thursday night.
