Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly is open to completing a move to Manchester United in the summer transfer window, according to sources at ESPN.

According to the same story, Manchester United are still open to making reinforcements in the January transfer window, but they accept that it may be hard to bring in the players they want.

The report cites the Metro as claiming that Koulibaly has now informed Napoli he wants to move to Old Trafford this month, however, the Italians are determined not to sell in January so the proposed move may be delayed until the summer.

The need for a world class center back at Old Trafford has never been this big and club chief Ed Woodward should do something about the situation now and not in the summer.

There is a belief that the addition of Koulibaly would help Real in the second half of the season as they look to overturn a 10 point gap to Barcelona at the top.

As far as the current campaign is concerned, not all is lost yet.

The club is playing catch up in Spain, not only in La Liga's title race but just to finish in the top four and avoid the embarrassment of potentially failing to qualify for the Champions League.

I have already raised this topic that United should break the bank to sign Koulibaly in the winter transfer window.

Over the weekend, it was reported that United had identified Koulibaly as their leading defensive target, despite previously being strongly linked with Leicester City's Harry Maguire and Tottenham Hotspur's Toby Alderweireld.
