A Paris police spokeswoman said firefighters are now at the bakery on Rue Trevise in the 9th arrondissement of north-central Paris.

A number of people have been injured after a gas leak caused an explosion in Paris, police have said.

A police spokeswoman said several injuries have been reported but no deaths.

The spokesperson, who wasn't authorised to be publicly named, provided no further details.

Several buildings in the surrounding area have been damaged and pictures of the scene show a large amount of debris strewn in the street. Debris from a burned vehicle and broken glass littered the pavement.

Weekly protests by the yellow vest movement, which is railing against the economic policies of French President Emmanuel Macron, were scheduled for Saturday.
