Mueller Met With Trump's Campaign Pollster, a Former Manafort Associate

Mueller Met With Trump's Campaign Pollster, a Former Manafort Associate

Senior Democratic lawmakers called on Wednesday for further investigation into a revelation that in 2016 Donald Trump's then-presidential election campaign chairman gave polling data to a man USA prosecutors have linked to Russian intelligence.

The New York Times later reported that Manafort instructed Kilimnik to provide the data to Serhiy Lyovochkin and Rinat Akhmetov, two Ukrainian oligarchs who Manafort has worked for in the past.

Manafort, the convicted former Trump campaign chairman, is accused of lying to special counsel Robert Mueller's prosecutors about both of those interactions with the associate, Konstantin Kilimnik.

The revelation Manafort, who is now being held in an Alexandria, Virginia, jail, shared the data emerged via a paperwork snafu in a Washington, D.C. court this week. "Nothing about it", he said in response to a reporter's question.

"Such a failure is unsurprising here, where these occurrences happened during a period when Mr. Manafort was managing a USA presidential campaign and had countless meetings, email communications, and other interactions with many different individuals, and traveled frequently", the Manafort attorneys argued.

"Did you know Paul Manafort was sharing polling data from your campaign with the Russians?" Manafort, who sat in a wheelchair during a court hearing in October, also has severe gout, his lawyers said.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a former Trump campaign aide told Reuters that he was unaware Manafort had shared data with Kilimnik and found the news "disturbing" and especially problematic because the data was provided to a foreign national.

Trump has long denied any wrongdoing during the campaign and has labeled Mueller's probe a "phony witch hunt".

"It's not a crime to talk to a Russian", Giuliani said. Manafort pleaded guilty in September to conspiracy charges related to that Ukraine work, and had agreed to cooperate truthfully with Mueller's team.
