DeSantis is expected to pick appeals court Judge Lagoa for Supreme Court

Rick Scott, Florida's governor the past eight years, called Lagoa a "fantastic choice" who has had a "stellar legal career".

In coming days he'll fill the other two vacancies on the seven-member court.

Florida Senate Democratic Leader Audrey Gibson from Jacksonville said she's concerned with the lack of details in DeSantis' new directive.

"The Cuban people do not know what laws apply to them or whether they will receive a fair trial after arbitrarily being accused of political crimes", he said.

"To my fellow Floridians, I say to you: judicial activism ends, right here and right now", DeSantis said during the speech.

"Obviously, this is focused on what we're going to do as a state", said DeSantis. Though her side won the case, in an event that captured world attention, President Bill Clinton and U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno sent armed U.S. agents into the home, seizing the boy and ignoring the rule of law.

"With so many organizations that have called for their resignation, I think it shows that the governor was listening to what we asked for", Andrews said. He promised to appoint state state Supreme Court justices in the mold of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. "I think we'll really re-energize our constitutional order here by doing that". "So while this is a chance to change traditional representation in Florida's Supreme Court, it's also a major ideological shift".

"Florida has never had a Florida Supreme Court with a majority of justices who believe in a limited role for the judiciary".

The governor recalled that, when he announced Nuñez as his running-mate previous year, he said "Jeanette's life, what she's done, was really an inspiration to a lot of young women".

Ron DeSantis announced an executive order calling for $2.5 billion over the next four years to go toward Everglades restoration - a $1 billion increase - and the establishment of a blue-green algae task force. The 17-story tower, built in 1925 as a newspaper headquarters, is a symbol of hope, freedom and democracy - like New York's Ellis Island for generations of European immigrants - for many in the Cuban American community.

In her remarks, Lagoa, accompanied by her parents, husband and three daughters, left little doubt that she will fulfill DeSantis' expectations.

She received her Juris Doctor from Columbia University in 1992, serving as an associate editor of the Columbia Law Review.

The new justice has served on the Court of Appeals since her 2006 appointment by Bush. Former Justice Rosemary Barkett was born in Mexico, but because her parents were of Syrian descent, she has credited former justice Raoul Cantero with being Florida's first justice of Hispanic descent.

The South Florida Water Management District will be directed to immediately start the next phase of the design of the Everglades Agricultural Area Storage Reservoir Project and ensure the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approves the project according to schedule.

DeSantis' order also establishes a Blue-Green Algae Task Force, which would work with a task force that Scott asked the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to reactivate past year.

This article has been updated to reflect that Lagoa is the state's first female Cuban-American justice.
