Oklahoma QB Austin Kendall reportedly enters transfer portal

Austin Kendall surprised many in Norman when his name was reportedly spotted in the NCAA transfer portal on Friday afternoon.

If Kendall chooses to leave the University of Oklahoma, the Sooners will likely still have two scholarship quarterbacks in redshirt freshman Tanner Mordecai and true freshman Spencer Rattler. He joins a pool that consists of Alabama's Jalen Hurts and Ohio State's Tate Martell, and previously included former five-star Georgia quarterback Justin Fields.

Kendall was Baker Mayfield's backup in 2016 and battled Kyler Murray for the starting job into fall camp this past season.

Eric Bailey of the Tulsa World was first to report the news. He has already graduated, so he would be eligible to play immediately.

Does this put Oklahoma in the market for a transfer quarterback of its own? But if he leaves, the Sooners offense will be left in the hands of a freshman.

A Murray return may be more than most OU fans could possibly hope for with the multi-sport athlete drawing first-round possibilities in the National Football League draft, but this does make for an intriguing weekend with the deadline to declare looming on Monday. He played well in the time he was given, completing 71.8 percent of his passes (28 of 39) for 265 yards and three touchdowns.
